Kandy sits in Sri Lanka's hill country, wrapped elegantly in mist and green hills. It's the kind of city where ancient temples meet everyday life, and you'll definitely need at least two days in Kandy to really soak it all in.
Start at the temple of the tooth
This is Kandy's big draw. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses what Buddhists believe is an actual tooth of Buddha. Get there around 9 AM if you can- it gets packed with tour groups later in the day. You'll see monks in orange robes, smell jasmine and incense, and hear the constant hum of prayers. There's a museum inside about Raja, this incredible elephant who carried the tooth relic during festivals for 50 years. The golden roof catches the light in the most beautiful way.
Spend time in the gardens
The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are about 15 minutes away by tuk-tuk. You could easily spend half a day walking around these gardens. There's this massive Javan fig tree that spreads out like an umbrella, and the orchid house has flowers in colours you didn't know existed. If you want something quieter, Udawattekele Forest has hiking trails where you might spot monkeys swinging through the trees. The forest feels cooler than the city, and there are spots where you can see Kandy spread out below you.
Eat where the locals eat
Forget fancy restaurants! The best food in Kandy comes from tiny places you'd almost walk past. Hela Bojun Hala is a government-owned food court where local women cook breakfast dishes that their grandmothers taught them. Try egg hoppers- they're like crispy bowl-shaped pancakes with an egg cracked in the middle.Mandiya is another gem. The owner runs this four-table spot and serves the kind of rice and curry that makes you understand why Sri Lankans eat it every single day. The fish curry has this tangy taste from dried goraka fruit, and there's always jackfruit cooked until it's tender. Get there before 1 PM because once the pots are empty, that's it for the day.Kottu roti is a must-try at least once. Watch the cook chop up flatbread on a hot griddle, mixing it with vegetables and spices while making this rhythmic clanging sound with the spatulas. It's like dinner and a show. If you prefer something lighter, Balaji Dosai makes excellent South Indian vegetarian food that won't leave you feeling stuffed.
Where to stay
Finding the right place to sleep matters more than you'd think. 4-star hotels in Kandy, Sri Lanka give you comfort without the crazy prices of luxury resorts. Places like Kandy Myst by Cinnamon work well because you're close enough to everything but can still relax by a pool after walking all day.

Watch the dancers
Kandyan dance shows happen every evening at cultural centres around town. Dancers wear these elaborate costumes with silver belts and headdresses, spinning and leaping to drum beats that you feel in your chest. The fire walking finale always gets gasps from the crowd. Shows last about an hour and cost around 1000 rupees.
Day trips worth taking
Kandy works great as a base for exploring nearby places. Sigiriya rock fortress takes about 2 hours to reach, and climbing it at sunrise is something you'll remember for years. The cave temples at Dambulla have these ancient Buddha statues that seem to glow in the dim light. If you've got time, take the train to Ella- the ride goes through tea plantations and mountains, and people hang out of the doorways taking photos the whole way.
Getting around
Tuk-tuks are everywhere. Always settle on a price before you get in - around 300-400 rupees for most trips within the city. The drivers know every shortcut and love chatting about where you're from. Local buses are another cost-effective way to travel and go everywhere, though figuring out which one to take can be confusing. Just ask someone- Kandyans are genuinely helpful!
When to visit
August brings the Esala Perahera festival, when decorated elephants parade through streets lit by torchlight. It's spectacular but crowded and expensive. Other months are calmer, with December to March being the driest. Either way, Kandy has this timeless quality that makes any visit feel special!
