As one of the region's top beach holiday hubs, Mauritius is the perfect vacation destination to explore with children. Families who are bound for the paradise island will find that the country offers a wide variety of activities and sightseeing hotspots to enjoy. From timing the visit to exploring major nature reserves, parks and recreational attractions in the country, here's how to make the most of a family getaway in captivating Mauritius.

Travel during the Right Period

Families heading to Mauritius must ensure that their family getaway takes place during the dry season in the country. As the weather conditions might not only include monsoon rains but also cyclones during the wet season, it's crucial to avoid the months of January and February. November, December and March, in contrast, are ideal for a family holiday on the island as there are sunny skies and clear conditions all around during these months.

Secure a Beachfront Resort

When it comes to booking Mauritius suites for oneself and the children, it's crucial to consider the location of the resorts in question as not all villas offer easy access to the island's beaches. So whether it's the Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas or any other property, a beachfront base can make a big difference for those travelling with children.

Sign up for Water Sports Activities

Water-bound activities and excursions in Mauritius not only cater to the needs of adults but also younger travellers. Sea kayaking is one such activity while tube riding is also safe for kids even if more daring water-based adventures such as kitesurfing and parasailing are strictly for adults.  Families can also embark on snorkelling tours around the coast together and discover the colourful coral reefs and marine creatures that occupy the fringes of the shoreline. Scuba diving is also accessible for children over 10 years of age provided they have the basics of the sport down pat. Learning how to snorkel and dive during a trip to Mauritius can also be a great way for families to spend quality time together while learning new skills. The lagoon surrounding Mauritius provides safe and shallow snorkelling and diving opportunities to newbies so there's no need to venture too far from shore.

Spend Time at La Vanille Nature Park

Spread out across 5 ha, La Vanille Nature Park is a nature reserve that outdoorsy families can enjoy on a day tour. Established in 1985, the wildlife sanctuary is not only home to crocodiles and lemurs but also several monkey species, bats and deer. The biggest highlight at the park is the herd of Aldabra Giant Tortoises that occupy the enclave. Families can also get a crash course on Sugarcane Trains and the colonial legacy of the country's railway network that was primarily used for sugarcane transportation.

Stop by Casela Nature Park

Holidaymakers with a passion for safari excursions and wet and wild adventures must also head over to the Casela Nature Park. Often described as the closest thing to a safari park in Mauritius, the venue not only offers visitors the chance to witness the big cats but also take part in feeding activities. There are not one but two restaurants on-site where families can dig into local treats or plan an early 8 am breakfast that includes the participation of the park's resident giraffes.

Relax at Pangia Kids Park

As one of the more recent additions to the leisure hubs in Mauritius, Pangia Kids Park is a fantastic place to not only wine and dine but also enjoy mini golf sessions. Child-friendly rides and a restaurant that allow kids to craft their own pizza toppings are all part of the landscape at this popular new park on the island.
