Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Built in 2001 by the former ruler of Oman, the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the stunning sight of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque will greet you no sooner you leave Muscat International Airport and beeline for the city centre. This place of worship is characterised by a magnificent main prayer hall inclusive of a dome that is best known for its white stone finish. Additionally, as patrons begin taking in the enormity of the Mosque, the structure’s four minarets coupled by its well-paved walkways will fall into focus. In terms of the architecture, the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque’s interior is made up of Islamic tilework, horseshoe archways and gold calligraphy that would truly make for an insightful and educational encounter with Omani heritage.

Al Alam Palace

Though inaccessible to the public, the stately Al Alam Palace which witnessed members of Omani royalty live and walk through its halls during times of old, still retains a semblance of appeal. Seen as one of the quirkiest constructions that you will stumble upon in Muscat, Al Alam Palace was constructed in 1972 and bears evidence of a colourful façade together with exquisite tilework and trumpet-shaped columns of blue and gold. The gates of the Palace are as far as you may venture to but in turn, you may pose against them and attempt to make out the old city walls, high up in the mountains. 

Oman National Museum

Set foot inside the four walls of the Oman National Museum and prepare to be escorted back in time to when early human settlements discovered the Oman peninsula. What’s more? This cultural edifice reveals a fascinating array of archaeological findings that also celebrate the nation’s maritime prowess, the applied & fine arts and crafts across the 14 permanent galleries that can be discovered. Some of the main talking points include traditional dresses and jewellery that go back to the heyday of the sultanate. 

Mutrah Fort

Relive the days when battle lines were drawn and strategies were put in place to withstand the marauding Ottomans of the 16th century from the iconic Mutrah Fort. From the highest point of this stronghold, clear views of the old quarter in Muscat can be caught sight of that bring to light a bygone era still fondly recalled by the locals. Considered the brainchild of the Portuguese, the Mutrah Souk saw the light of day in the 1580s and overlooks one portion of the harbour. For picture-perfect views and an energetic climb, especially during summer, then there is no better place than Mutrah Fort.

Royal Opera House Muscat

Known to showcase a distinct pink come sunset, the brilliantly appointed Royal Opera House Muscat has been at the very center of artistic spectacles from Oman, the region and around the world. If you’re a fan of ballet and opera music, then the Royal Opera House Muscat is the place to be at. The overall design specifications are nothing short of stunning owing to its grand entryway, carved balconies and wooden ceilings that would make you feel as if you were seated inside a dazzling Omani palace, draped in all its finery. 

Mutrah Souk

Located some 4.1 km from Al Falaj Hotel which is one of the finest hotels in Muscat City Centre, the bustling scenes enveloping the Mutrah Souk will serve as your final stop on your travels in Oman’s capital. Underpinned by bursts of colour at every turn and corner, this traditional marketplace is a beehive of activity where you may purchase a host of souvenirs and best buys for not too steep a price. Whether it is antiques, knickknacks, coffee, spices or gold, Mutrah Souk has got you covered. Although in order to maximise your outing, be sure to haggle well but in a respectful and polite manner.
