Although Koh Samui in Thailand is best-known as a honeymoon hotspot and a beach holiday hub for the masses, the island is also the perfect location for a family vacation. Blessed with sunny skies and spectacular beaches, the sheer wealth of recreational activities available on the island makes it a hot favourite among families with kids of all ages. From splashing around to timing the visit, here are some tips on how to spend your family getaway in Koh Samui.

1. Time the Tour

It is essential that all families heading to Koh Samui should time their visit so as to tour the island when the best weather conditions are in place. Monsoon rains and other inclement weather patterns can not only make most holiday activities impossible but also ruin the overall morale and mood of the family members, especially the younger travellers who will have set expectations of their beach holiday. The period from October to the first two weeks of December must be avoided as these are the wettest months of the year in Koh Samui. Late December to February is far more ideal for a group vacation as it is also the peak tourist season on the island.

2. Spend a Day at Aquapark Samui

Occupying pride of place in Chaweng Beach, families should spend at least a day splashing around the massive Aquapark Samui. Sprawled across a vast expanse, this one of a kind splash centre is home to slides, swimming pools and other engaging water-based activities and rides. Not only is Aquapark Samui one of the biggest water parks on the island but also among the safest as the children's areas and rides have been constructed with safety measures in place. All visitors are also required to don life jackets when enjoying the facilities so no mishaps can occur.

3. Don't Forget Ang Thong Marine National Park

Renowned as one of Thailand's finest marine sanctuaries, the pristine and breathtaking surroundings of the Ang Thong Marine National Park is the perfect setting for family adventures. Those based at Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort or any one of the other Koh Samui family resorts can book a tour of the park via their accommodation provider or find a private tour operator online. Some of the group activities available at the park include snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking although families who are not adept at these types of water sports can always sign up for an island-hopping tour or a boat cruise of the islands that make up the Ang Thong Marine National Park.

4. Enjoy Samui Go-Kart Rides Together

When it comes to spending memorable evenings after days at the beach, there's no better venue than Samui Go-Kart to put one's family's skills to the test. With a well-designed go-kart track that extends across 500 metres, Samui Go-Kart has been a favourite fixture for holidaying families since it first opened its doors in 1993. Although go-karts are only suitable for children who are over 10 years of age there are double karts accessible for the use of younger children who wish to ride in tandem with their parents. Samui Go-Kart is open from 9 am to 9 pm and also houses a snack bar where families can refresh themselves after a ride or two.

5. Sign Up for Samui Canopy Adventures

Although zip-lining may not be an activity all families can enjoy, those who are driven to outdoor adventures will find that Samui Canopy Adventure provides hours of distraction. Ideal for nature-loving families, the ability to zip line above the forest floor in an eco-friendly setting is a great way to spend time outdoors. With international standard gear and safety measures in place, one need not worry about allowing teens and young children to enjoy a canopy adventure of their own.
