Glenelg is one of South Australia’s most beloved tourism destinations. The beautiful beach and resort culture has made it a go-to holiday spot for both locals and tourists. This area first got its name from one of the British bureaucrats named Lord Glenelg. Getting to and around Glenelg is a very convenient task because of the seamless transportation system that is available.

Getting to Glenelg

Before learning how to get around this city, it is first important to know how to get there. When you first make your way to the area, you will want to get to your accommodation in Glenelg before you explore the beach and other attractions it has to offer. If you are coming in by air, you will arrive at the Adelaide Airport. From there you can take a 10-minute drive that takes you to Oaks Glenelg Plaza Pier Suites. Alternatively, there is also a bus route that operates which will take you to Glenelg in under 30 minutes. If you are coming via Adelaide CBD, you can take the bus, tram, or hire a bike.

Walk to the closest destinations

If you only want to explore the attractions within the Glenelg area, you can easily access them via foot. However, if you do choose to make this your mode of getting around, it will be good to be prepared with enough water, a hat, and an umbrella based on the weather conditions. Jetty road which is a key attraction in Glenelg consists of a long line of stores, entertainment centres, and a shopping precinct. You can spend an entire morning or even a whole day exploring this part of Glenelg on foot and finish your adventure by treating yourself to some fantastic food.

The tram

The tram is another way to get not only around Glenelg but also to visit the sights in and around Adelaide. There is a tram stop at the end of Jetty road which is operational almost throughout the day, from just after 5 in the morning until 11.30 in the night. However, this is during weekdays while the starting time is a little later during the weekend and public holidays. In terms of how to pay for the tram, if your stop is along Jetty road, it is usually free. For any other destination, you have to pay by card, coins, or buy a travel ticket from a newsagent.

The bus

There are quite a few busses that go from Jetty road to the city. These bus numbers are J1, 167, and 265. The busses will also give you accessibility to areas that are a little further away such as the Adelaide Airport, Henley Beach, Harbour Town, and Brighton. You can buy tickets for bus journeys from the bus driver himself or a newsagent if you want to be prepared in advance. Make sure that you have coins or a payment card with you since these are payment methods that are always accepted.

Explore the area by bike

This is also a great way to explore Glenelg and the surrounding areas. You can hire a bike which will give you complete flexibility regarding the times you want to use for travelling to different places. It’s usually advisable to follow the general bus routes if you are going out of Glenelg and aren’t familiar with the roads in the area. However, before you hire a bike, ensure that it is in good condition so that you can have safe and hassle-free travels. Between a bike and getting around on foot, you will be able to avoid public transportation for the most part.
